Often, the worst part of experiencing negative feelings or a negative situation is that we believe it's permanent. This thought isn't at the forefront of our minds. It's a subconscious belief that makes something bad seem so much worse.
Whatever you're feeling right now will change.
When I'm feeling anxiety or I'm hurting, it seems as though that feeling will last forever. It doesn't.
I find myself wishing that my confidants weren't tied up at work because it doesn't seem as though I could bear to wait another minute to pour my heart out to someone. Then, when I finally get the chance, the pain I was once feeling isn't so strong anymore. Sure, I may still need to talk about it but at this point, it's without all the gusto of emotion that would have come with my story just a day or two ago.
I've learned that the times I feel overwhelmed by emotions are only temporary.
When we can tell ourselves in the moment of despair, "this is temporary," it keeps us anchored in the truth that we will get through it. In fact, most of what we're experiencing will change within the next day or two.
When you're deep in despair, tell yourself:
This is temporary. Although this may last longer than I'd like, it will change.
What do you tell yourself when you're overwhelmed? I'd love to read all about it in the comments!
Next week, I'll be talking about that one thing that we're constantly searching for in Who Am I? Why We're Looking for Answers to a Question that Personality Tests Can't Fully Answer at Own Your Victory. Don't miss it!
